SUMMARY:"A History in Fifty" – an outline of England’s architectural development seen through fifty properties of the National Trust
DESCRIPTION:A HISTORY IN FIFTY – an outline of England’s architectural development seen through fifty properties of the National Trust \nWith David Grech \nIn 2020 the Covid pandemic impacted on all our lives. For some of us that was just a matter of inconvenience as we put our lives on hold\, but for others the impact of the pandemic was far greater; cancelled weddings\, redundancy and\, even\, the loss of a loved one. I was more fortunate and\, aside cancelling a couple of holidays and not being able to visit family or friends\, life continued much as before. \nAs we entered 2021\, and our third lockdown\, there was a tangible sense of déjà vu. Like most people I couldn’t wait to be vaccinated\, though it gradually became apparent that\, on its own\, vaccination might not be the longed for ‘silver bullet’. At about the same time our new National Trust handbook dropped through the letterbox\, and while perusing it in an idle moment I started to tot-up how many properties we had visited and\, more to the point\, how many I had sketched. From there it was a short step to realising that it would be possible to tell the story of the development of architecture in England through a selection of\, say\, 50 of the Trust’s properties\, and that selecting\, visiting and sketching those properties might give a focus for local trips once the lockdown started to be lifted\, followed by longer trips away in our campervan as travelling restrictions were eased. \nI already had sketches of a number of the Trust’s properties\, but needed to add another 30 or so to be able to properly tell my story. These have been chosen from amongst all the various man-made structures in the care of the Trust that illustrate conscious design intent. I have therefore included a prehistoric stone circle and a range of vernacular and essentially functional buildings to sit alongside more recognised architectural works. While my final selection is a matter of personal choice\, I hope that the resulting collection is both representative of the Trust’s varied portfolio and\, at the same time\, provides a tangible narrative to the story of England’s architectural development. \nDoors open 7pm\, talk starts 7.30pm. \nCash bar. Ticket price includes one free drink. \nTickets £10 (inc booking fee) on https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-history-in-fifty-tickets-226406827917

SUMMARY:Harbottle and Jonas folk duo - back by popular demand
DESCRIPTION:Doors open 7.30pm\, concert starts at 8pm. \nBar and light refreshments available. \nCome and join us for another evening in the company of Harbottle and Jonas – \n“One of the finest folk duos in the country” according to Mike Davies of Alternative Roots \nPartners in life and music\, dynamic Devon based folk duo Harbottle & Jonas are one of the most exciting acts on the UK circuit today\, combining a love of the richness of traditional folk with their own original and powerful songwriting. Dave and Freya have developed a distinct and compelling signature sound\, blending concertina\, harmonium\, cittern\, stomp box\, acoustic guitar and banjo with their beautiful and closely intertwined vocal harmonies. \nFolkwords magazine said they’d ‘stake money on a bright future’ for the pair. They released their debut album ‘Cutthrope Hill’ in 2014 and even had a beer named after it at the launch gig. They are well known for being one of the hardest working bands on the folk circuit and have clocked up an average of 150 gigs a year between 2014 – 2019. They have been awarded funding to work with the Peace Museum to create new songs using lyrics from the Conscientious Objectors Songbook and in 2018 and 2019 David and Freya led the folk course at the internationally renowned Dartington Summer School this year. \nWell-travelled across the UK and abroad they have undertaken two tours of Germany playing in venues such as REWE supermarkets and an 800-year-old church in North Friesland. Harbottle & Jonas have managed to establish themselves versatile in venue\, original in song and one of the most exciting prospects on the folk circuit. \nHarbottle & Jonas\, released their new album ‘The Beacon’ in March 2021\, the album received widespread rave reviews and charted at No.24 in the ‘Official Folk Charts’. The album was written and recorded at home. \nThe Beacon itself refers to Ugborough Beacon\, an ancient site that looms over South Brent\, the Dartmoor village that David Harbottle and Freya Jonas call home. The home to which they hurriedly returned from a cancelled tour of Germany\, rushing to make it back to Devon before the UK entered lockdown in mid-March. \nDuring the weeks that followed\, the duo escaped the monotony by walking the moors with their dog\, Murphy\, connecting with their fanbase via streamed concerts and their ‘Saving the Good Stuff’ Facebook video series (with 500\,000 views and counting). After eighteen months of touring with 2019’s album ‘The Sea is my Brother’ the enforced period of calm was\, in their own words: “a journey of discovery\, that has taught us the importance of love\, compassion and empathy\, whilst discovering the needs and delights of our inner creature”. \nThe new album\, their fifth\, is a collection of songs that seeks to bring comfort\, and questions what fire of intention we will light so that our future paths might be more steadfast\, clear and community-spirited. Much like the beacons of old that served as a warning with flaming fires\, Harbottle & Jonas hope that their new collection of songs written during this period in our history will encourage us to reflect\, adapt and sing together once more. \n“Spellbinding originals” – Musicians Union \n“Disarmingly honest and spine-tingling’” – RocknReel (R2) \n“Awash with strong songs & excellent musicianship” – Folk Radio UK \n“Fine contemporary folk music” – Tom Robinson\, BBC Radio 6 Music \n“Stunning songwriting and heart-rending arrangements” – Americana UK \n\n\nTickets £15 + booking fee on\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/harbottle-and-jonas-folk-duo-back-by-popular-demand-tickets-214861184587
